Ventura College Writing Center

 

Located on the bottom floor of the Library & Learning Resource Center (LRC), the Ventura College Writing Center is a free resource for students to receive assistance with all stages of the writing process. The tutors in the VC Writing Center help students with writing for any course on any topic. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the VC Writing Center welcomes all students. There are three ways to receive assistance from the VC Writing Center: 

In-Person  

Any student enrolled in class at any of the Ventura Colleges can come into the Writing Center to receive one-on-one tutoring assistance with no appointment necessary.  

Students receiving services from the Educational Assistance Center (EAC) can schedule tutoring appointments through the EAC. 

Zoom 

Students who cannot attend in-person tutoring can receive live assistance via Zoom during our open center hours by clicking this link: https://www.venturacollege.edu/departments/student-services/tutoring/online-tutoring and following the instructions. 

Online Paper Drop Off 

Students who have most or all of their writing assignments completed can submit it for tutor review and feedback through their Canvas course. Click “Online Tutoring” at the bottom of the menu options list on the left-hand side of the Canvas Screen. Next, click “VC Writing Center Paper Drop Off” and follow the instructions.  

 

Students visiting the Writing Center should bring:
  • The assignment prompt from the course instructor 

  • The assignment rubric from the course instructor

  • Any research or prewriting already begun

  • Their laptop if they are using it to work on and complete the assignment (computers are available for student use)

Students can visit the Writing Center for assistance with:
  • Brainstorming Topics

  • Creating essay outlines

  • Organizing ideas

  • Researching

  • Formatting

  • Creating thesis statements

  • Writing thank-you letters

  • Creating resumes

  • Completing scholarship application essays

  • Any other academic writing assistance needed for VCCCD schools/students

Tutors Will Not:
  • Line-edit or proofread papers

  • Do the work for the student

  • Tutor outside the Writing Center, Zoom, or Paper Drop Off

  • Complete peer review exercises to make up for missed class sessions

  • Teach class concepts/material

  • Help with classwork from schools outside the Ventura County Community College District
