Why work with us?

As a tutor, you will support your peers while building valuable skills that go far beyond the classroom. Additionally, you will be part of a supportive and collaborative community with opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. Professional opportunities include being recognized as a CRLA certified tutor.

What is CRLA?

CRLA is the acronym for the College Reading and Learning Association, a nationally recognized organization that sets standards for tutoring and learning support programs in higher education. The Ventura College Tutoring Center has earned Level 1 certification and is the first college in the Ventura County Community College District to receive this recognition.

This certification reflects our commitment to high standards in tutor training and student support; ensuring a consistent high-quality learning experience for our students and tutors.

For tutors, CRLA certifications represents a structured training experience and a recognized credential that reflects strong skills and preparation in peer tutoring.

During your first semester, you will work toward certification by completing the key requirements listed below.

  • Complete 25 hours of tutor-student contact
  • Participate in 10 hours of training
  • Successfully complete the IDS V09 Tutorial Procedures and Methods course
Pay Rate

Tutors are paid an hourly rate and are also compensated for training sessions and team meetings. Tutors who hold a Bachelor's degree may be eligible for a higher starting pay rate.

 $17.75 per hour for drop-in tutors

 $18.63 per hour for embedded tutors

What is the role of a Drop-in Tutor?

As a drop-in tutor, you will provide on-the-spot support to students seeking help with questions, assignments, and study strategies. This role offers the opportunity to work with your peers while building your adaptability by tailoring your tutoring approach to meet each student's needs.

What is the role of an Embedded Tutor?

As an embedded tutor, you will take an active role in supporting student success along side faculty in a specific course. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with a faculty member to create a supportive learning environment that strengthens students' understanding of course material.

Outside of the classroom, you will lead group study sessions, exam reviews, and maintain communication with students through Canvas.

Note: As a faculty-lead program, tutors are identified and recommended by faculty. To be considered for an embedded tutoring position, a faculty member must complete an Embedded Tutor Request form.
