Step 1: Your First Step Toward Applying for Financial Aid

If you plan to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you'll need to create an FSA ID before submitting your application.

An FSA ID is your secure username and password for the U.S. Department of Education. It allows you to securely sign your FAFSA, access your federal student aid information, and complete other federal financial aid requirements.

Creating an FSA ID is free and only takes a few minutes.

Important for California Dream Act Applicants (CADAA):
Students completing the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) do not create an FSA ID. If you are unsure which application you should complete, continue to Step 2: Complete the FAFSA or CADAA for more information.

Why Do I Need an FSA ID?

Your FSA ID allows you to:

  • Electronically sign your FAFSA.
  • Access and review your FAFSA information.
  • View your federal student aid records.
  • Complete federal financial aid requirements.
  • Sign federal student loan documents.
  • Manage your federal student loans throughout your educational journey.

Who Needs an FSA ID?

Each FAFSA contributor must create and use their own FSA ID.

Depending on your situation, contributors may include:

  • You (the student)
  • A parent of a dependent student
  • Your spouse, if required
  • Your parent's spouse, if required

Each contributor must have a separate account using their own email address and personal information. FSA IDs cannot be shared.

Before You Begin

Have the following information available before creating your account:

  • Your legal name exactly as it appears on your Social Security card or official records
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security Number (if applicable)
  • Personal email address
  • Mobile phone number (recommended)

Tip: Use a personal email address that you will continue to have access to after graduation whenever possible.
