1. What is the textbook lending library?
Knowing that students have a difficult time with the cost of textbooks, the library has developed a collection of textbooks for students to checkout for the entire semester. It is our way of encouraging students to remain in school and meet their educational goals. The library staff members work very hard to keep the collection up-to-date with current editions. However the collection will also includes older editions because many instructors will allow their use.
2. When should I line up for the lending library?
That is a personal decision. Students often line up several hours before the start time. Textbooks are checked out on a first-come-first-serve basis.
3. May I send a member of my family or a friend to check out a book for me if I cannot make it on that day?
No, privacy guidelines prohibit our doing this.
4. How many textbooks can I check out? How long can I keep them? When are they due back? What is the fine if I return them late?
Three textbooks per student is the limit. Students may keep them for the entire semester and they are due back on the last day of final exams. There is a fine of $.25 per hour up to $5.00 per day.
5. Why is the late fine so high for overdue textbooks?
The $5.00 per day fine is set to encourage students to return the textbooks on time. We want to assure the texts are available to students to use the next semester.
6. How can I find out if the library has the textbooks I need?
Search for a textbook by title or author using the online catalog on the VC library website. The textbooks allowed semester long check-out display “Lending Library” as the shelf location.
7. What do I need to bring with me to check out a lending library book?
Students will need photo identification, a printed copy a current class schedule, and a printed textbook list created from the Ventura College Bookstore website.
8. Why do I need to print a textbook list from the Ventura College Bookstore website?
Two reasons: 1. to ensure the check-out of correct textbooks. 2.To aid library staff in locating books.
9. What if I owe a library fine, have an overdue book, or have a library obligation on my record? May I still check out a book?
No, you must clear all your library obligations before lending library day. Students must clear up their records ahead of time as the library staff will not handle these issues during lending library. Book drops are located at the flag pole in front of the Administration Building and outside the LRC Building. Book drops are checked daily even when the library is closed.
10. What if I have not paid my tuition or health fees or owe fees to another department? May I still check out a book?
Yes. The library is only concerned with overdue library books and fines.
11. I don’t have a driver’s license, what other forms of photo identification may I use?
You may use anything that has your photo and name on it to verify who you are, such as: high school photo identification card, ASB card, fitness card, a photo debit card, a Costco card, a work identification card, a passport, etc.
12. I am on a wait list for a course; may I check out a textbook for that class too?
No. Students are only allowed to check out books for officially enrolled courses. This is to assure that the library assists as many VC students as possible. You are welcome to check the textbook lending collection again after you are officially enrolled in the course.
13. I am taking classes at Oxnard and/or Moorpark College, may I check out a textbook for those classes also?
No. This collection supports VC students and their VC courses. This is to assure that the library assists as many VC students as possible. Your understanding is appreciated.
14. If the library does not have a textbook for my course in the lending library, where can I find a copy to use until I am able to purchase one?
The library does have another option for you if you cannot afford to purchase your textbook. The library has a Library Use Only Reserve Textbook Library, located at the circulation desk, where you may check out your textbook to use in the library for a two hour period.
15. What is the difference between the Textbook Lending Library and the Reserve Textbook Library?
The Textbook Lending Library includes textbooks that students may check out for the entire semester. They are a mixture of current and past editions. The Reserve Textbook Library includes current edition textbooks that students may check-out for a two hour period through the semester for use in the library only.
16. Where are the textbooks located in the library?
The semester long Textbook Lending Library Is located to the left of the circulation desk on the counter high shelves as you enter the library. The Reserve Textbook Lending Library is at the circulation desk.
17. Where does the library get the textbooks?
Both collections are generously supported through funds from the VC Foundation. Students and faculty are also generous in donating their used textbooks to the program. We also receive funds as part of the Title V grant and often receive funds from the (ASVC) Associate Students of Ventura College.
18. I have textbooks from last semester, can the library use them?
Yes, the library would welcome the donation of any textbooks you might have and are not using. Please drop them off at the library’s circulation desk or you may drop them in any of our book drops. Please mark them “donation” and place your name and address inside so that we may appropriately thank you. Also we appreciate your encouraging friends to donate also.
19. How can I donate toward the textbook lending library?
You may donate your used textbooks during “Book Buy Back” by placing your used textbooks in the Library’s textbook donation bin or you may drop them off at the circulation desk in the library. You may also donate monetarily through the Ventura College Foundation. The library and the foundation are always looking for partners to provide continued support for this program. The library would welcome a donation of any amount.
