Agriculture students at an Agriculture convention

Program Purpose:
Students participating in the Agriculture program will apply knowledge of plants, animals, soils, and climates to environmental settings with an understanding of basic principles of soil fertility and water quality. Students will predict plant growth outcomes by applying basic principles of botany, and be able to recommend management strategies in the use of Earth’s natural resources, including the ability to recognize, interpret, and recommend control strategies for common plant pests and diseases, and understand the implications of the use of herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and integrated pest management principles used in Agriculture, Landscape Management, and Natural Resources Management.

Program Description
The Ventura College Agriculture program seeks to prepare students for future careers within the agriculture industry through hands-on experiential learning and curriculum designed to engage students in all aspects of agriculture, from the field to the fork.

The program allows students to earn an Associates degree (AS) or Certificates of Achievement (COA) in the areas of Agribusiness, Plant Science, Food Safety and Veterinary Technology. The AS degrees in Agriculture Business and Plant Science also comprise the core undergraduate work required for transfer to CSU agriculture Baccalaureate programs.

Graduates from the Ventura College Ag program will be prepared to enter numerous sectors of the growing agribusiness industry, which provides the products and services related to production, processing, marketing, and distribution of food products and services. Professionals in this industry bring strengths from the integration of business, science, and technology.

Agriculture:
California is home to the largest food and agricultural economy in the nation. California's farmers and ranchers have made this state the leader in agricultural production for over 50 years. With 350 crops and an agricultural economy that exceeds $28 billion, the rest of the world looks to California to see what's next in agriculture. Our courses in the Agriculture program focus on landscaping, natural resources, and the business of agriculture.
