Dual Enrollment Students

Dual enrollment is for K-12 students who wish to take college classes in addition to their K-12 courses.

The goal is to provide students who can benefit from advanced scholastic and vocational education the opportunity to take college-level courses that are not available through their primary school or other alternatives.

College course content may include adult themes, materials, or discussions, and instruction will not be modified due to the presence of a minor in the classroom. Some courses may also include physical or activity-based requirements.

By enrolling in college courses, K–12 students are expected to engage with the curriculum at the college level and meet the same academic and participation expectations as all enrolled students.

Families are encouraged to review course descriptions carefully and consult with high school counselors to ensure the course is an appropriate fit for the student.

Now that your student is part of Ventura County Community College District, there are few matters of which you must be made aware.  Your student has officially enrolled in an institution of higher education, and as a result, your student is now protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974.

What does this mean?

When a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a post-secondary institution, regardless of age, FERPA rights are transferred from the parent/guardian to the student.  Students must act on their own behalf.  Parents, guardians, relatives, or friends of VCCCD students are not permitted to enroll, drop, or add classes on behalf of the student.  The same applies for transcript requests and enrollment verifications.

As a parent/guardian, do I have access to my child’s academic records?

Under Section 49061 of the Education Code, parents/guardians of community college students do not have a right to access their children's student records, regardless of whether the student is under the age of 18. In accordance with this regulation, students' academic records may be released to parents/guardians only with the written consent of the student. Students may obtain an Authorization for Release of Information for their parent or guardian in Admissions & Records.  Student must be physically present when the Authorization for Release of Information is submitted.

I am a parent/guardian and I need help logging in to, navigating, and/or processing transactions in my student's MyVCCD account. What do I do?

College officials may only assist the student with access to their MyVCCDD account, which contains records covered under FERPA. Additionally, students are expected to act on their own behalf. Parents, guardians, relatives, or friends of VCCCD students are not permitted to enroll, drop, or add classes on behalf of the student.

As a parent/guardian, can I contact my child’s instructor regarding course content, assignments and/or grading policy?

Your student is enrolled in a college course and it is important to understand that instructors may only work directly with students, as opposed to the type of parent/guardian interactions you are accustomed to at the high school level. Under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) instructors are not required to discuss student performance or other student-related issues with parents/guardians.

Faculty establish a syllabus for each course, which include the course content or objectives, assignments, a general guide to the pacing of the course and information about how grades will be determined. Once a student receives the syllabus for the course from the instructor and the student decides to remain enrolled in the course, the syllabus becomes the contract between the student and instructor.

As a parent/guardian, can I request a grade progress report from my son's/daughter's instructor?

• Your acceptance email will be sent to the email you used to create your OpenCCC Account when you applied
• The acceptance email contains a link to set up the portal
• Click on the link to activate your MyVCCCD student portal after your acceptance email is received
• Sometimes the acceptance email goes to an "Important," "Other," or "Junk" folder

ORIENTATION

• Complete the orientation online through your MyVCCCD portal under the Tools Window in the Left hand navigation menu, under the Student Support Section. You can also access the orientation by searching for it in the portal search bar at the top.

• Work with your high school principal/designee to pick your recommended college courses.
  • List all recommended courses on your Dual Enrollment - Recommendation e-form.
• Enter your school principal/counselor and parent/guardian's email addresses into the e-form so they can review and sign the recommendations.
  • Note: The parent/guardian's email and approval is only required once. If you previously submitted a form for approval, you will not be required to obtain approval again. 
• Make sure you enter the correct email addresses. If you input the incorrect email, the electronic form will not be forwarded so it can get processed.
  • This form must be signed by the student, school principal/counselor, and the student's parent/guardian before it can be processed by Admissions & Records.
• Home school Students: Download your Private School Affidavit and attach it to the e-form.

• Students 8^th grade or lower are required to meet with the VP of Academic Affairs or their designee to clear a one-time student hold. This hold is essential to facilitate a smooth transition into Ventura College's academic environment.

  • After applying for admission to Ventura College, please email vcacademicaffairs@vcccd.edu to request an appointment with the VP of Academic Affairs or their designee. In the email, kindly provide your full name, student ID (900#), and any relevant documents that may be required for the meeting.

  • The meeting will be an opportunity to talk about your academic journey, address any questions or concerns you may have, and make sure that all necessary steps are taken to create a successful educational experience at Ventura College.

  • The VP of Academic Affairs, or their designee will determine if the student has the abilities and sufficient preparation to benefit from instruction at a community college, and that the student's safety and that of others will not be affected. The decision of the VP Affairs, or their designee shall be final.

• YOUR DUAL ENROLLMENT e-FORM WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY ROUTED FOR PROCESSING WHEN YOU CLICK SUBMIT.

• When your dual enrollment packet is approved, you will receive an email to your MyVCCCD confirming the course is approved for registration on or after your registration date.

PREREQUISITES

• Clear prerequisites by following the steps on the Prerequisite page.
  • Prerequisites are enforced for all students
  • You may check if a course has a prerequisite in the Online Schedule of Classes, by clicking on the CRN.
  • If you have met the prerequisite for the course outside of Ventura College, you will need to request prerequisite clearance by following the steps on the Prerequisite page.

REGISTER

• Register for classes that were approved on your Recommendation for Dual Enrollment through your MyVCCCD portal under the Register/Pay tab

  • Students 8^th grade or lower are required to meet with the VP of Academic Affairs or their designee to clear a one-time student hold. This hold is essential to facilitate a smooth transition into Ventura College's academic environment.

PAY FEES

• Dual Enrollment Students: Are exempt from paying enrollment fees - All other fees apply  

**Please remember, being cleared by Dual Enrollment doesn't automatically enroll you. Take these steps:

• Make sure you have a current application on file with Ventura College.  Otherwise, you will need to Apply for Admission to VC.
• Complete your MyVCCCD Portal setup and clear any outstanding balance you may have with the Student Business Office.
• Clear any prerequisites (if applicable) using the Steps to Requesting Clearance of a Prerequisite | Ventura College.
• Register for your courses in your MyVCCCD Portal. Watch this how-to video: How to Register For Classes.
• High School Dual Enrollment students can't enroll in more than 11 units per term.
• A new Dual Enrollment - Recommendation e-form is required and must be recommended and approved by your high school counselor or principal.

If you still cannot register after completing the steps above, please try again to complete them first. Then, contact the Admissions & Records Team at VCDualEnrollment@vcccd.edu from your MyVCCCD email address. Please be sure to include your student ID number (900#) in the email.

All registration must be completed by the add deadline. See the Schedule of Classes for class dates, times, prerequisites, and deadlines: www.venturacollege.edu/schedule. If any fees are associated with your registration, please pay them as soon as possible.  If you have any questions regarding your fees, please email VCDualEnrollment@vcccd.edu from your MyVCCCD email address.
