For 100 years, Ventura College has stood as a beacon of opportunity and a cornerstone of this community, where generations of families have attended seeking a better future. Since our founding in 1925, local leaders, families, educators, and industry have worked together to ensure that access to higher education is not a privilege, but a promise for all.
What began as a bold idea, offering college courses at Ventura Union High School, has grown into a dynamic institution serving over 12,000 students annually across our Main Campus, East Campus in Santa Paula, and online. Ventura College was built by the people of Ventura County, and it continues to thrive thanks to their unwavering support: parents who trust us with their children's dreams, adult students who change the direction of their futures, alumni who return to teach and serve, industries that partner with us on curriculum and equipment, and generous donors who offer life-changing scholarships.
Over the past century, we have awarded over 90,000 degrees and certificates. That is 90,000 strong made up of first-generation students, returning adults, high school graduates, veterans, and lifelong learners who accomplished their goals and give back to their communities. Our graduates are the lifeblood of Ventura County: nurses, firefighters, welders, teachers, entrepreneurs, engineers, artists, and civic leaders. They fuel our local economy, uphold public services, and reflect the diversity, talent, and determination of our region.
Justin Arbaiza, VC MESA alum and graduate of the Class of 2020, said of his experience, “My major is Structural & Earthquake Engineering, and as a Ventura local, attending Ventura College and being part of MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The support, resources, and community helped me discover my academic passion, achieve my goals, and pursue my master’s degree without having to leave home."
Justin’s words echo the same spirit that launched Ventura College a century ago, a belief that education close to home has the power to transform not only individuals, but entire families and neighborhoods.
Ventura College is also proud of its longstanding tradition of arts and athletics that enrich our campuses and region. Our music programs play an integral role in the cultural life of Ventura County, through inspiring instruction, celebrated performances, and enduring partnerships with organizations like the Ventura Music Festival. Our popular summer Schwab Academy introduces local youth to the joy of music and helps foster the next generation of performers. In athletics, where our football team also marks 100 years, we celebrate a legacy of excellence, sportsmanship, and community pride. From championship basketball and tennis teams to powerhouse football seasons, our athletes have brought excitement, unity, and joy to fans and families across the county.
Looking forward, Ventura College continues to evolve to meet the needs of today’s economy and tomorrow’s challenges. We are proud to launch our first-ever Baccalaureate degree in Automotive Technology. This groundbreaking program will not only advance the local automotive sector, but also provide cutting-edge education in electric vehicle technology, preparing students to lead in a rapidly evolving industry. Like this milestone program, many academic offerings have been made possible through partnerships with industry leaders like Gene Haas Foundation, Toyota Corp., and Limoneira, reflecting our commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers in our region.
Our health sciences programs are another shining example of collaboration. Thanks to the steadfast support of local hospitals like Community Memorial Health, dedicated medical professionals, and generous donors through the Ventura College Foundation, we have grown a robust Allied Health division that responds to regional healthcare needs while uplifting students into rewarding careers.
Of course, it is impossible to capture the full scope of what has made Ventura College successful over the past 100 years, from academic excellence and student support programs to the faculty and staff who bring our mission to life. That’s why I invite members of our community to visit the campus, take a tour, and learn more about our rich history and what lies ahead for the next century.
Throughout our centennial year, we are celebrating the generations of faculty, staff, students, and community members who have made Ventura College what it is today. Most importantly, we are reaffirming our mission to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality education that uplifts the entire community.
As we imagine the next 100 years, Ventura College will remain a launchpad for dreams, a stabilizing force for families, and a cornerstone of equity and prosperity in Ventura County.
Because when education is rooted in the community, everyone rises.
