VCCCD would like you to get to know the staff and faculty who contribute their time, talent & education to the success of our students. We will regularly highlight employees across all four campuses, sharing their professional expertise, their educational path, and a few fun facts about them.
Alex Henderson, General Counselor/VC Counseling Dept.

Name: Alex Henderson

Position: General Counselor/VC Counseling Dept.

What does that entail?

I provide students at Ventura College East Campus (VCEC) with counseling, and my three main areas of focus are academic and career counseling and helping students who would like to transfer to a four-year college or university.

How long have you worked for the District?

I am in my fifth year with the District.

Were you a student at one of the district’s colleges and if so which one? What was your major and your degree?

I don’t have a degree from the District. I have a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish, and master’s degrees in ESL and guidance counseling.

Are you from the area and if not where are you from?

I have lived in California for 10 years. My family and I moved here from New York, where we had lived for many years. I am originally from Birmingham, Alabama.

Share something personal about yourself:

I enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, and anything outdoors with my kids. I also enjoy reading, especially mysteries.

What do you find rewarding about your job or career?

Our students are wonderful and it is hugely rewarding to work with them. Many of them have overcome major obstacles to be here, and yet they persevere and grow and do great things at VCEC. It is a privilege to work with them.

Two words to describe yourself:

Friendly, diligent.

Do you do any volunteer work? If so, what?

I did some volunteer work not long ago with the Los Padres Forest Watch, doing litter cleanups in wilderness areas around Ojai. I also did volunteer work with the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club when I lived in New York.
