2021 Poetry Slam

Students! Participate in our Diversity & Cultural Festival by entering your original poetry in the 2021 Poetry Slam.

Write and share original poems that speak to Social Justice, coinciding with the One Book One Campus, “How to be an Anti-Racist” by Ibram X. Kendi, specifically with a focus around the hope and healing for what Social Justice may bring.

The Ventura College Diversity & Culture Festival is a four-day event the week of April 12-15, 2021. The week-long event will include speakers, panels, and the annual VC Poetry Slam, composed of student poets performing their own written works. Events will take place via Zoom and poetry submissions will be pre-recorded. From the recorded poems submitted, finalists will be chosen by our judges and asked to perform their original work live via Zoom on Thurs, April 15th.

Please read carefully below for details and how to submit your recorded poem.
Multiple Poetry Slam Workshops will be offered to students. Please see below for details.

The Poetry Slam will be judged by VC English faculty and the finalists will be awarded 1st ($250), 2nd ($150) and 3rd ($100) place prizes, sponsored by the ASVC.

Poetry Slam Filming Requirements:

Step 1:

  • Video submission contest: Each student should video record and save their poetry performance.
  • Film with a horizontal orientation.
  • Face the camera so it captures your head to mid-torso (medium shot).
  • Each recitation should be filmed in one single shot from one static angle.
  • The sound and picture must be clear.
  • Videos cannot be edited. Do not add music, graphics, titles, virtual backgrounds, or computer animation.
  • Use of professional recording studios is prohibited.
  • For video submission contests, each recitation requires its own separate video.

Step 2:

Submit your recorded video(s) by March 26, 2021  Click to submit

Students from Ventura and Oxnard Colleges are welcome to submit. The event organizers will review submissions to ensure videos meet film requirements. They will then forward these videos to the contest judges for their review. Judges will be provided score sheets for each submission and review them independently. These video submissions will be used to select the final FIVE contestants for the live competition. Videos should not include footage other than the student reciting/performing their work, but students may record their recitation/performance more than once, and send their best recording for each recitation/performance.

Step 3:

Live contest on video platform on April 15, 2021:

Ventura College will hold a live Slam Contest over Zoom. Judges will submit scores for each criterion; winners and runners-up will be announced at  the end of the Slam.

Please note:

Students must begin by stating the title of their poem and their name.

A student’s own editorial comments before or after the poem are not allowed

Poems must be recited from memory
