Program Student Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the associate degree program in nursing will develop the necessary knowledge and skills essential to the function of registered nurses in the direct care of clients. Students will be able to 1) demonstrate and foster high standards of nursing practice; 2) provide competent and safe care in a variety of settings to individuals or groups of patients with diverse self-care needs across the life span by utilizing the nursing process for knowledgeable decision-making and judgment based on critical thinking, clinical competence, collaboration and accountability, and 3) demonstrate management skills in providing care to individuals and groups of patients with diverse needs.

Program Description

The nursing program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and is a candidate for National League of Nursing Accreditation. Upon completion of the Associate Degree program in Nursing , students will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN examination leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse. The student must have fulfilled all requirements as defined by the California State Board of Registered Nursing. Students who choose not to complete the degree requirements are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensing examination after completion of content required for licensure. Please be advised that not all state recognize registered nurses who choose this option. Please contact the ADN program director for additional information.

Ventura College offers a two year associate degree in nursing (ADN) through the School of Nursing and Allied Health. Learning opportunities consistent with the requirements of the California Board of Registered Nursing are provided and are based on our program's philosophy and objectives. The Associate Degree Nursing program is approved by the Board of Registered Nursing(BRN). As of May, 2011 the program has gained Candidacy status for initial accreditation by the National League of Nursing (NLN). Accreditation by the NLN is an independent choice by Ventura College and validates that the nursing program meets higher standards of nursing education. Nursing is a vocational program leading to completion of an associate degree, to licensure and /or to transfer.

Mission

The mission of the Ventura College School of Nursing is to enhance the health of a diverse community by providing excellence in nursing education to develop professional nurses who represent and serve diverse communities; by creating an environment of closeness and willingness to help others; by utilizing nursing research, fostering a community that supports critical thinking, the acquisition of knowledge and the ability to make sound clinical judgments; and by advocating for continuous improvement in the health care system and the profession of nursing.

The School of Nursing responds to the needs of our community in developing the curriculum; and aligns itself with our community service partners in providing educational experiences for the students.

The faculty use diverse teaching strategies to meet the varied learning styles and learning needs of our students. Faculty are committed to assisting all students to achieve their professional goals by providing a supportive environment for learning and personal growth in an accessible learning environment. Student support programs are utilized to assist students in achieving academic success from entry to graduation.
