Program Required Health Clearances

For all program related physicals

You may obtain your health clearance with the VC SHC or with another medical provider. It is recommended you have your physical and immunization review performed at the VC SHC as we work closely with the academic programs and have a better understanding the requirements. If you have your physical and immunization review performed at the SHC and are in need of titers, vaccines, tuberculosis (TB) test, or other requirements, you may have those performed at the VC SHC or with the provider covered by your insurance. The SHC does not take health insurance.

If your program is not offered at the VC/VCEC campuses, please check with your program director to be sure it is ok to come to VC for your physical exam. For example, the Oxnard Fire Academy physicals need to be done at Oxnard College. The health centers of the three colleges have similar but not equal capabilities, therefore it is important to work with the health center of the college offering the program.

The health clearance paperwork must come from the program and brought to the health center by the student. We do not provide the health clearance packets for students. It is the student’s responsibility to understand the requirements and know what is needed for their health clearance.

How to best prepare for your health clearance appointment

Have health packet completed to the best of your ability including allergies, medications, and surgical history. Please bring a copy of your immunization record to the appointment. If you have had a positive TB test, bring the record of prior positive test, results of most recent chest xray, and documentation of treatment for TB.

Prior to calling the VC SHC for an appointment, please register with the student portal and complete the forms found under the “Forms” tab on the Student Health Portal

Please note: None of the VCCCD health centers offer the COVID vaccine. We do have Tdap, Influenza, MMR, Varicella, and Hepatitis B vaccines (call to confirm availability). Only the QuantiFERON Gold (QFT) blood test is available at VC for TB testing, we do not offer the 2-step skin test (TST).

ADN students can call to schedule health physical and immunization review once you have received the School of Nursing acceptance letter and health appraisal document packet. Be sure to read through the acceptance letter and documents carefully for instructions on how to proceed. Please be aware results for blood titers and QuantiFERON Gold (QFT) blood test for tuberculosis (TB) may take several days to result, don’t delay scheduling your appointment.

Health appraisal with private healthcare provider: Have your provider complete the health history, physical exam, vision test, and immunization review and all the required paperwork. Be sure the health care provider's signature includes their credentials (MD, DO, PA, NP) and clinic stamp. The student will need to upload the documents to CastleBranch.

Health appraisal performed at VC: After your appointment and completion of any testing, the documents will be uploaded to the VC Student Health Portal to access and upload to CastleBranch. The VC SHC does not upload documents to CastleBranch. In addition to uploading the documents to the portal, we will provide a physical copy of the documents for student's to retrieve from the SHC.

Admission to the CNA program is on a first-come basis upon completion of the clinic requirements found in the CNA Application Letter provided by the VC School of Nursing and Allied Health. The required health appraisal documents will also be included in the letter. Please read through the letter carefully for the specific health appraisal requirements. Considering the CNA program admission is on a first-come basis, do not delay making appointment for your health appraisal at the VC Student Health Center or with another provider. Please be aware results for blood titers and QuantiFERON Gold (QFT) blood test for tuberculosis (TB) may take several days to result, don’t delay scheduling your appointment.

Health appraisal outside of VC: Have your provider complete the paperwork, be sure the signature includes their credentials (MD, DO, PA, NP) and clinic stamp. The student will need to upload the documents to CastleBranch.

Health appraisal performed at VC: After your appointment and return of any testing, the health appraisal and immunization/titer verification will be uploaded to the VC Student Health Portal where you can access the documents to upload to CastleBranch - the VC SHC does not upload documents to CastleBranch. In addition to uploading the documents to the portal we provide the physical copy of the physical exam and records for any test results or immunizations.

EMT/EMT-P students can call for appointment once you have received your acceptance letter from the School of Prehospital and Emergency Medicine and have an active #900. Be sure to read through the acceptance letter and documents carefully for instructions on how to proceed. The acceptance letter may include the “Physical Examination and Immunization Requirements” or may be distributed during orientation. Once you have received the health appraisal forms, read the instructions carefully. Please bring the necessary forms and records, filled out, to your appointment. Please be aware results for blood titers and QuantiFERON Gold (QFT) blood test for tuberculosis (TB) may take several days to result, don’t delay scheduling your appointment.

Health appraisal outside of VC: Have your provider complete the paperwork, be sure the signature include their credentials (MD, DO, PA, NP) and clinic stamp. The student will need to upload to CastleBranch.

Vet Tech students can call for appointment once you have received your acceptance letter from the Veterinary Technology program and have an active #900. Be sure to read through the acceptance letter and documents carefully for instructions on how to proceed. The acceptance letter may include the forms for the Physical Examination and Immunization Requirements, including instructions on obtaining or documenting having received the rabies vaccine (2-dose series).

Health appraisal performed at VC: After your appointment, the required documents will be uploaded to the VC Student Health Portal where you can access the documents. We will also return the signed documents to the student after the appointment.

Rabies vaccine requirement information originates with the Vet Tech program. Availability of the pre-exposure prophylaxis vaccines is determined with each cohort. The SHC will not regularly stock rabies vaccines for students not enrolled in the Vet Tech program. Blood draw to check rabies antibody level (rabies titer test) is available for all students at any time.

The health appraisal requirements for Early Education may vary by field site. Consult with your instructor on what is required and bring any necessary paperwork or documentation to your appointment. Please understand what is required prior to making appointment to ensure we are able to meet your needs.

For some field sites, the only requirement is a Tuberculosis Risk Assessment (TBRA) which consists of questions to determine the risk for being a carrier of TB disease. If the TBRA indicates there is no risk, there are no further steps to take. At the VC SHC, the TBRA is free of charge. If the TBRA indicates there is a risk for TB, the next step is to have a physical exam, testing, and a possible chest x-ray. The fee for those services will vary depending on where the assessment is performed.
For some field sites, a physical exam and TB test may be required. The TB test may consist of a 1-step or 2-step skin test (TST/PPD) or a QuantiFERON blood test (QFT). The VC SHC does not perform the TST, only the QFT. If the field site requires a physical exam and/or TB testing, be sure you obtain the required forms necessary to document the exam and testing prior to making the appointment so you and your provider know what exactly is needed and required. Some sites may REQUIRE the TST or the QFT, please understand exactly which test the field site requires!

Please be aware the results for the QuantiFERON Gold (QFT) blood test for tuberculosis (TB) may take several days to result, the one-step TST is over 3 days, and the 2-step TST is over 2 weeks- don’t delay scheduling your appointment!

Health appraisal performed at VC: After your appointment and return of any testing or immunizations, the health appraisal and immunization/titer verification will be uploaded to the VC Student Health Portal where you can access the documents. In addition to uploading the documents to the portal we provide a copy of the required documents to students for your records.

Police Academy students can make an appointment for physical once you are enrolled in the Police Science Program and have an active #900. Prior to starting the program, you are required to have a health appraisal. The health appraisal forms will be provided to you by the program. Be sure to read through the acceptance letter and documents carefully for instructions on how to proceed. The acceptance letter may include the “Physical Examination and Immunization Requirements” or may be distributed during orientation. Once you have received the health appraisal forms, read the instructions carefully. Please bring the necessary forms and records, filled out, to your appointment. Please be aware the urine drug test may take several days to result, don’t delay scheduling your appointment.

Health appraisal performed at VC: After your appointment and return of any testing, the health appraisal and immunization form will be uploaded to the VC Student Health Portal where you can access the documents to submit to the POSC program. In addition to uploading the documents to the portal we provide a physical copy of the documents for student records.
