IRB/Faculty Research

Faculty, staff, and/or external groups who wish to conduct research on VC students or employees must receive campus approval prior to collecting data. Ventura College does not have an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Thus, as part of this process, approval must be obtained from an accredited external IRB.

To recieve campus approval, each of the following must be completed:

• The researcher has completed the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services Human Research Protection Foundational Training within the last two years.
• The researcher has completed the U.S. Dept of Education FERPA 101: For Colleges and Universities Training within the last two years.
• An executive sponsor (i.e. Dean, Vice President, or President) has reviewed the research proposal and agrees that it will benefit VC students and/or employees.
• The researcher has received approval from an accredited external Institutional Review Board.
  • In many cases, IRB approval is not granted until the researcher receives campus approval to conduct their research.
  • If this is the case, conditional campus approval can be granted pending external IRB approval.
• The researcher has emailed all completed IRB forms to the VC Dean of Institutional Effectiveness.
• The VC Dean of Institutional Effectiveness has reviewed and approved the research.
• The VC Executive Team has reviewed and approved the research.
