The football office at Ventura College will have some shiny new decorations in 2019.

Head coach Steve Mooshagian accepted the American Community College Football Coaches Association’s national Coach of the Year Award in San Antonio earlier this year.

Mooshagian, who guided the Pirates to their first appearance in the CCCAA state championship game in December, will also receive the Southern California Coach of the Year award during the state coaches association’s annual meeting next weekend in Visalia.

“It really doesn’t surprise me,” Ventura offensive lineman Tyler Orsini said. “I love Moose. … He’s a hell of a coach.”

VC (11-2) won at Riverside, 31-21, in the Southern California championship on Nov. 24 before falling, 40-35, in a wild CCCAA state championship in Sacramento on Dec. 8.

“I kind of thought to myself, ‘Good they selected it before the state game,’ ” Mooshagian joked. “It’s blown me away, really.”

Mooshagian (70-30) also passed Dick James on Nov. 3 to become the program’s all-time winningest coach. He’s 70-30 (.700) in nine seasons in Ventura.
