Welcome to The Department of Performing Arts!
Ventura College's Performing Arts Department prepares students to become highly skilled performing artists. We are pleased to offer small academic classes, applied study with highly qualified faculty, and a wide variety of music, theater and dance ensembles. Our students work alongside our dynamic faculty to develop the knowledge and skills to excel in a variety of fields. Registration Now Open for Spring Semester!
Spring 2024 Registration is now open, and the VC Performing Arts Department has so many great learning opportunities in Music, Theater, and Dance (both in-person and online) for all types of students. Plus, all three areas offer fantastic performing opportunities for students of all levels. Visit each discipline's page by using the MUSIC, THEATRE, and DANCE buttons in the sidebar for more information on Spring 2024 Classes.
Once your student portal has been created, visit my.vcccd.edu and select Register for Classes. Search classes by selecting ‘Spring 2024’ and using the appropriate CRN#.
Pay fees (approximately $75 per class). Fees includes: tuition, health fee, & student activity fees.

MARCH 2024! This brand-new competition will be open to all musicians of all ages residing in Ventura County AND to any current students or alumni of Ventura College, Oxnard College or Moorpark College (See eligibility requirements).
Open to every instrument, piano, and voice category!
Up to two winners will be selected to perform their chosen selection accompanied by the Ventura College Symphony Orchestra (Ashley Walters, director) in concert on March 9th, 2024 at the Performing Arts Center at Ventura College.
Application deadline: January 23
Preliminary Round: February 6
Monday, February 26, 2024 (5:15pm - 9:00pm, entire period attendance required)
Monday, March 4, 2024 (5:15pm - 9:00pm, entire period attendance required)
Saturday, March 9, 2024 (afternoon or early evening Dress Rehearsal with Orchestra)
Winners Performance: Saturday, March 9, 7:30-9pm; (entire period attendance required)
Eligibility
The Allegro Solo Competition is open to students of any age that meet the following eligibility requirements:
Applicant Must be 1.) a current resident of Ventura County OR 2.) a student currently enrolled at Ventura College, Moorpark College or Oxnard College OR 3.) an alumni of Ventura College, Moorpark College or Oxnard College.
To be eligible, All applicants must perform live in front of the judges at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center during the scheduled Preliminary Round on Tues, Feb 6 (4-9pm)
Applicant must be available for all required rehearsals (As outlined in "Important Dates" section)
Applicant must be available for the entire winner's performance on Saturday, March 9 (7:30-9pm)
Repertoire requirements
Contestants will audition with a single movement from any concerto, or with a solo of their choice that has orchestral accompaniment
Selections should be one single work (no multi-movement works)
Selections must be no longer than 20 minutes
Both Piano & Orchestra accompaniment music for solo must be available
For the Preliminary Round only, Contestants may perform their solo without accompaniment if they wish.
Presented as part of The Laurel Project (Faculty & Guest Artist Concert Series), internationally recognized guitarist Rovshan Mamedkuliev will perform an intimate program of guitar music.
The Azerbaijani-born musician moved with his family Russia, where he started taking guitar lessons at the age of eleven. Showing exceptional musical talent, he was accepted to the Nizhny Novgorod Conservatoire where he studied with nationally recognized guitarist Aleksey Petropavlovsky. He completed his studies with Honors in 2009 and was promptly invited to teach at the conservatory. In 2014 was named associate professor of classical guitar in the Maimonides State Classical Academy (Moscow). In 2023 he was named professor at the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music (Moscow).
His solo career has taken him around the world to cities including Brasilia, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, Zagreb, Belgrade, Istanbul, Vilnius, Sarajevo, Chisinau, Baku, Minsk, Seoul, Beijing, Moscow, Bangkok, Toronto, and Los-Angeles. He has given solo concerts at Carnegie Hall and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw. After winning GFA's International Concert Artist Competition, Rovshan gave a 51-concert solo tour throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Brazil. He has been a soloist with ensembles and orchestras including l’Ensemble orchestral de Valencia (Spain); Orchestre du Conservatoire National de Musique Superiur de Paris (France); Azerbaijani State Chamber Orchestra; Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic Symphonic Orchestra; and the State Symphony Orchestra of the Udmurt Republic. Rovshan has premiered many new works for classical guitar, including Concerto №3 "Antony" for guitar and symphonic orchestra by Philippe Lemaigre (Antony, France, 2012) and Concerto "Famalicao" by Elena Lebedeva for guitar and chamber orchestra (Kostroma, Russia, 2008).
Rovshan Mamedkuliev has been awarded top honors in many international competitions, including the "Hommage à Leo Brouwer" Competition in France; the Heitor Villa-Lobos Competition in Spain; the A. Frauchi Competition in Moscow; the Francisco Tárrega Competition in Spain; and the Michele Pittaluga Competition in Italy. In 2012 Rovshan won one of the most prestigious guitar competitions in the world - XXX Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist Competition (Charleston, SC, USA).
His published arrangements for guitar include "Masters of Russian Composition: Alexander Borodin and Anatoly Lyadov” (2014), "Fikret Amirov. 6 Miniatures”(2015). His recordings include “Con Anima” (2011), “Semi-Awake, Semi-Dream”(Contrastes Records, 2015) and a guitar recital for the prestigious Naxos label’s Laureate Series (2012).

On Friday, April 26, Brent Wilson will lead the Ventura College Concert Choir and Singers in a performance of Camille Saint-Saéns' moving Requiem and Vivaldi's Magnificat. For the second year in a row, this free, one-night only performance will be held at the San Buenaventura Mission. Featuring guest artists: Anastasia Milliaras, soprano; Christina Pezzarossi, mezzo-soprano; Benjamin Brecher, tenor; and Luvi Avendano, baritone. This special community concert is offered at no charge, seating is first-come, first-served.

On Saturday, May the 4th, Ashley Walters leads the VC Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra in a program that includes the US Premiere of Mark Menzies' Wai-rā-rawa; Shostakovich's Quartet No. 8; The first movement from Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, featuring Allegro Competition Winner Alex Fager as violin soloist; plus John Williams' Star Wars Suite for Orchestra.
