VENTURA COLLEGE TO HOST
“CONSTITUTION & CITIZENSHIP DAY”
SEPTEMBER 18
VENTURA: The Ventura College Financial Aid Office will host an information table, supply treats and provide a voter registration table in front of their offices on the Ventura College campus on September 18 from 10 am – 1 pm to acknowledge Constitution and Citizenship Day. The event recognizes the signing of the constitution and the responsibilities of citizenship, and is the second year that the College has participated in the new federally mandated activity. Educational materials will also be available at the East Campus in Santa Paula.
Although the federal government has mandated that educational institutions that receive federal funds recognize Constitution Day, the government neither funds the events nor designates what activities must take place. Ventura College is able to supply a wide range of materials, many bilingual because of the generosity of several elected local officials, including Senator George Runner (R-17th District), Assemblywoman Audra Strickland (R-37th District), and Assemblyman Pedro Nava (D-35th District). Materials contributed to the event include a range of bipartisan publications such as consumer guides, state and federal constitutions, information on lobbying and legislative processes, landlord-tenant information, and materials on the fellowship program with the legislature. The County Elections Office is supplying the voter registration materials and personnel. In addition to the educational materials and opportunity to register to vote and learn about the upcoming November election, students and other members of the Ventura College community and members of the public who stop by the tables can pick up cookies and candy! The public is welcome to come by.
