Ventura College Community Education is offering three free Career Awareness Camps in December for students in grades 7 and 8 on December 20, 21, and 22, 2010.
"Fun with Computer Gaming" will teach students how to design and program their own computer games. Students also will learn about the wide variety of jobs that use virtual realities in their day-to-day operations. This camp will run from 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. The instructor is Erik Amerikaner, a Microsoft Certified Professional Trainer. He is a co-author and reviewer of numerous textbooks in the field of computer applications and teaches at Oak Park High School.
“Rockin’ Robotics” will provide students with the opportunity to use math, science, and engineering, while working in teams, to design their own amazing machines. Camp times will be from 8:30 a.m–12:30 p.m. The instructor for Rockin’ Robotics is Neal Friedman, Director of the Simi Valley based Robotics And Things, which makes motorized modular building systems and robotic parts and kits. He gives children's workshops on how to create and build robotic vehicles throughout the area.
In “Construction is Cool,” students will learn about the wide variety of jobs in the construction industry, while drawing plans, estimating costs, and building a model of a garden shed. Construction is Cool will meet from 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Instructor Laurie Bennett has been involved for the last 20 years in local career education workshops. She is also the Education Chairwoman for the National Association of Women in Construction and Ventura County Contractors Association.
