Ventura College Hosts “One Book One Campus” Events
Month of Activities Shares “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”
with Faculty, Staff, Students and Community
VENTURA: For the fifth year, Ventura College is hosting a month of activities for the One Book One Campus One Community program, based on the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, set during the 1960s and focused on issues involving mental health. Dozens of faculty and staff in disciplines spanning the breadth of the college curriculum will be involved. In addition to many faculty placing the novel on their course syllabus for student discussions, activities for the month include an art exhibit of works done by clients of the Santa Barbara Mental Health Association (When the Fog Clears), the showing of several related films, guest speakers, presentations and panel discussions on related issues, and a marathon reading of the novel. Ventura College was the only community college in the District to participate in the One Book One State program in 2002, and one of the very few colleges to have continued the annual event, since the first year’s state level program was discontinued due to lack of funds.
This is the first year the community is involved as part of the learning aspects of the program. The college has chosen to incorporate service learning projects in various courses that focus on mental health in the community. Students are encouraged to earn extra credit in their classes by volunteering with such organizations as Schools on Wheels, which provides tutoring for homeless children, the National Association of the Mentally Ill, Project Understanding, ARC Industries, Kids Art and the Invitation to Create.
Details of the VC project can be found by visiting the Ventura College web site (www.venturacollege.edu) and click on the One Book One Campus link. All events are free and open to the public. The current Calendar of Events is as follows:
