VENTURA COLLEGE PRESENTS
WORLD MUSIC CELEBRATION CONCERTS
VENTURA: Through the generous assistance of Barbara Smith and the Ventura County Community Foundation, the Music Department at Ventura College announces the inauguration of the World Music Concert Series.
Each year, the Music Department will bring together the Ventura community for an evening of Traditional World Music. For a few hours, the Ventura College Theater will resonate with the sounds, sights and culture of a unique music community. Whether the performances are strangely exotic or slightly familiar, the evening will always be an exciting event for all to enjoy. And as a particular benefit for the students of Ventura College, each group will also have a free lunch time lecture / demonstration performance on campus. Students will have the opportunity to see the performers, their instruments, their regalia, and even their dance steps up close and personal.
First in the series will be Cascada de Flores (waterfall of flowers), a professional music ensemble that explores the musical traditions of Mexico and Cuba. Their music is strongly rooted in folkloric forms, yet they steer clear of anachronistic mimicry of the past, instead interpreting their repertoire in their own subtle way.
Cascada de Flores will perform:
- Saturday October 13, 8pm, at the Ventura College Theater, on the campus, facing Loma Vista. Parking is next to the Theatre in the west lot. Admission $15 general, $10 students & seniors and staff.
- Tuesday October 16th, Noon to 1:20, in the Ventura College Campus Quad and outdoor stage. Lecture/performance/demonstration, no charge, but parking is $1.
