Ventura College Hosts “One Book One Campus” Events
Month of Activities Shares Orwell’s “1984”
with Faculty, Staff, Students and Community:
Life Under Terror Discussion October 18, 8pm
VENTURA: For the seventh year, Ventura College is hosting a month of activities for the One Book One Campus One Community program; this year based on the novel, 1984 by George Orwell. Faculty and staff in a variety of disciplines spanning the breadth of the college curriculum will be involved. In addition to many faculty placing the novel on their course syllabus for student discussions, activities for the month include an art exhibit of representative works done by students and faculty, the showing of related films, and panel discussions on related issues. Ventura College has participated in the One Book program since 2002, when the State of California initiated the program with a state-wide reading of Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
On Saturday, October 18, at 8pm, the college will host a free showing of the film in the Library Reading Room (2nd floor) based on the novel, also titled 1984, starring Richard Burton and John Hurt, followed immediately by a panel discussion of the film and of life under totalitarian regimes. Participating in the panel will be Professor Simon Waltzer, Dean Alex Miranda, Ph.D., and Department Chair Mayo de la Rocha. Professor Waltzer, who teaches film, speech and Shakespeare will discuss his life in Peru under the Juan Velaso regime, and will discuss the film. Dr. Miranda will discuss his experiences under Operation Condor in Latin America over two decades, which were a major motivation for his decision to earn his doctorate in psychology and to counsel people who had suffered through the abuses, disappearances and terror of that period. Mr. de la Rocha, professor of history, will discuss the history of and the political processes that led to the development of extremist regimes in those areas.
