The box office opens at 7 p.m.
Opening with sleigh bells and sounds of the outdoors, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is light-hearted and frolicsome. Other times the woodwinds sneer in grotesque confrontations. Yet again, the final movement slips into celestial realms when the soprano soloist, Laura Wargo, sings “The Heavenly Life.” Mahler’s music cuts from scene to scene as the music recalls earlier moments throughout the piece. It is a remarkable symphonic journey not to be missed.
Ranking as the most popular concerto of all time, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by Louise Lofquist. Lofquist teaches at Pepperdine University and holds advanced degrees in both music and non-music fields. She is known throughout California as a premiere collaborative pianist. The concerto’s arduous melodies combine with brilliant piano playing to create the quintessential Romantic experience.
Rounding out the concert will be Paul Creston’s tribute to two great American writers, E. E. Cummings and William Faulkner. Soloing in these musical portraits are Kim Curtis on the flute and Dinah Washington on the English horn.
The public is invited to attend this adventurous spring concert directed by Dr. Burns Taft.
