37 EARN VENTURA COLLEGE NURSING DEGREES
VENTURA: 37 new nurses received their pins at the Ventura College 2007 Nursing Pinning on Friday, May 11 at the Ventura High School Auditorium. The traditional ceremony included the personal pinning of each graduate by the nurse or nursing instructor who had mentored or inspired the student to enter the profession. Ventura College Nursing Professor Linda Barlow-Palo, R.N., M.N., C.C.R.N., was the keynote speaker.
A number of students were recognized for their significant academic achievements and community contributions. Ten received Red Cross Awards for contributing a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer work in the community, often at flu shot clinics and other health facilities: Maria Carmela Darilag, Shanna Hill, Leila Ilog, Sarah Morris, Orilia Ortega, Elisa Ranola, Tammy Rudd, Fe Salinas, Lupe Reyes and Isis Wagner.
Eleven received Peer Tutor Awards for their work assisting other students with the challenging academic nursing curriculum: Szilvia Beylik, Judit Budai, Debora Cross, Maria Carmela Darilag, Shanna Garcia, Jenifer Gransee, Margaret Martinez, Elisa Ranola, Tammy Rudd, Fe Salinas and Isis Wagner.
Denise Miller is the fifth recipient of the Dobson Medal for Academic and Clinical Excellence. Born and raised in Bakersfield, Denise earned a BS in chemical engineering from UCSB and then worked in the petroleum industry for a few years. She returned to UCSB for an MS in material science and then spent 20 years as a research & development scientist. During those years, she volunteered at a no kill shelter for senior dogs and provided homes for several older dogs. Then one day, she decided that it was time to transfer her love of caring for dogs to caring for people. She talked to a few nurses and was impressed to learn that every one of them found nursing to be diverse and extremely satisfying. That did it. Denise quit her job and enrolled at Ventura College to become a nurse. After graduating in December 2006, Denise has been working as a staff nurse on the St. John’s Medical Center telemetry unit. She says that she has never had a job that was more exhausting, challenging, and fulfilling and she has never felt better about her work than when a patient says “Thank you for taking such good care of me”.
Denise received a 10K gold medal designed to be worn as a pin, a certificate and will be recognized in a photo display in the Nursing Department Office.
The Dobson Medal for Clinical and Academic Excellence in Nursing annually recognizes the student who best typifies the ideal clinical, academic and behavioral characteristics of a new graduate from the Ventura College Associate Degree Nursing Program. Selection by the nursing faculty is based on a variety of criteria, including being “the student I would most like to care for me or my family”. The medal was established by Janet Dobson Leifur, RN, MSN, a Ventura College School of Nursing instructor and program alumnae, and her sister, Joy Dobson Way RN, MS, also a program graduate. The award is in memory of the life and professional inspiration of their mother, Winifred Mary Dobson, who, in 1937, received the Garettson Medal for Efficiency, given annually to the most clinically and academically outstanding graduate of the Newport (R.I.) Hospital School for Nurses.
Two graduates were named as “Graduates with Distinction” for their contributions to the School of Nursing, to the community or their employers, and to their fellow students: Courtnay Reeder and Isis Wagner.
The School of Nursing and Allied Health prepares students to care for individuals in hospitals, homes, and other health care settings. Graduates practice the art and science of nursing by combining knowledge from many different disciplines to promote the restoration and maintenance of health in their clients. The School administers the Associate Degree Nursing, Certified Nurse Assistant, Home Health Aide, and Continuing Education for Registered Nurses programs.
