Toy Drive for Mixteco Children
Contact: Professor Mayo de la Rocha
Approximately 20,000 indigenous Mixtecos from the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca live and work in Ventura County. Facing extreme poverty and bleak employment prospects in their native region, many Mixtecos have come to California in search of agricultural jobs. These hardworking young families are linguistically and culturally isolated; many speak neither English nor Spanish, but only their indigenous language, Mixteco. As a result, they are the poorest people in Ventura County despite the fact that they are making a vital contribution to the regions economy. They have incredible needs in health care, housing, nutrition and education.
MECHA is asking for community support. Many of these Mixteco children have never experience a Christmas. Please donate a toy or make a monetary contribution that would make there Christmas a joyous experience. Donations are tax deductable. The deadline for the toy collection is December 6, 2008.
Drop toys off at K-1 (classroom) at Ventura College or call Professor Mayo de la Rocha at 654-6400 Ext. 3123 and the toys can be picked up. The college is closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday, but will be open again on Monday, December 1.
