VENTURA COLLEGE PARTICIPATING IN
ERLE STANLEY GARDNER MYSTERY FESTIVAL
VENTURA: Ventura College is participating in the City of Ventura's Erle Stanley Gardner Mystery Festival, which is honoring the Ventura lawyer who wrote the Perry Mason series of books. The public is invited to attend the following events:
As part of its Student One-Act Festival, the Theater Department is presenting "The Case of the Irate Witness" in the Ventura College Theater September 21, 22, 23, 24 29,30 and October 1. The play is based on a short story written by Gardner that Howard Leader, VC student, wrote into a script for dramatic performance. The September 21 is the final, free dress rehearsal, at 8 p.m. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm, the Sunday performances are 3 pm matinees. Admission is $5 for general admission and $3 for seniors, staff and students.
Throughout the evening of September 20 and day of September 21, the library will show videos in the lobby of the LRC on the life of Gardner, including rare 1930 film footage of his Ventura office.
The Ventura College Library will host "An Evening with Perry Mason" on Thursday, September 21 at 7 p.m. in the Library 2nd Floor Reading Room. The evening will begin with a presentation by Richard Senate on Erle Stanley Gardner's life in Ventura, followed by a live visit by attorney Perry Mason, his secretary Della Street, and detective Paul Drake. A panel will present various perspectives on the man and his work, and conclude with an interactive discussion of his novel The One Eyed Witness (available for purchase in the VC Bookstore). Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
The Library is currently displaying memorabilia from the life and work of Erle Stanley Gardner.
The VC Opera and Musical Theater, in collaboration with the VC Choirs, will perform "Trail by Jury" by Gilbert and Sullivan in the Ventura City Council Chambers, 501 East Poli Street, on September 23 at 1 and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
