VENTURA: Ventura College Extended Opportunity Programs and Services Department and the Ventura County Office of Education Migrant Education Program will host approximately 800 migrant students, grades four through twelve, from throughout the states of California, Texas and Arizona to compete in speech debates Saturday, May 3.
The students will be arriving by buses at 7:30 am, have breakfast in the Athletic Event Center, participate in the debates and workshops on attending college over the course of the day, have lunch in the college Quad at about noon, and then have dinner in the Athletic Event Center at about 6:00 p.m., receiving awards and recognition for their participation and success in the event. The children’s parents will be accompanying them and local community members will be volunteering to serve as judges and helping with the various activities.
Dr. Charles Weiss, outgoing Superintendent of Schools for Ventura County and Assemblyman Pedro Nava, 35th District, are scheduled to attend the dinner, as are Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees Chair Larry O. Miller, Ph.D. and Trustee Stephen P. Blum, Esq., and Ventura College President Robin Calote, Ed.D.
