Young artists compete in the second annual Henry Schwab Ventura County Violin Contest on May 24, 2009, Sunday evening at 7 pm. The contest features violinists Jonathan Tang from Thousand Oaks, Mina Hong from Simi Valley and Curtis James of Ventura, each playing a concerto with the Ventura College Symphony. The program is held at the Ventura College Theatre on Loma Vista. Tickets are $5 for seniors, staff and students, and $10 for general admission. They are available at the door. The public is invited to this exciting event.
Each young contestant was a winner of the preliminary round in January. At that time, they played their selections with piano accompaniment for judges Robert Lawson, VC Music Department chair and Irving Weinstein, concertmaster. As finalists, they will perform with orchestra under the baton of Dr. Burns Taft.
Jonathan Tang plays the Second Concerto for Violin by Wieniawski. Ms. Hong solos on the Mendelssohn’s E Minor Concerto. Curtis James plays Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto in G.
Prizes totaling $2,000 will be awarded at the competition. The Schwab Family Trust, Miriam Schwab trustee, sponsors the contest in collaboration with Ventura College Department of Music. It is a tribute to Henry Schwab, noted violin soloist and teacher, who devoted his life to playing and teaching the violin. The Competition seeks to encourage the art of violin playing by young artists of Ventura County.
