The Ventura College Symphony Orchestra will be performing an all Spanish musical program featuring the great compositions from some of the great composers that have inspired audiences throughout the 20th century.
Composers:
Rodrigo’s most famous work, Concierto de Aranjuez, was composed in 1939 in Paris. The music was inspired by the gardens at Palacio Real de Aranjuez. Rodrigo said, “The concerto evokes a vast array of colorful imagery and feelings. Being a history lover, especially Spanish history, when I created this concerto, I had in mind the courts of Charles IV, a Bourbon king of eighteenth century Spain, whose summer holiday residence was the palace of Aranjuez. Everything about it is awe-inspiring: its lordly palace; its gardens and fountains; its majestic views.”
Arturo Marquez's Danzon No. 2 . This electrifying piece has been called Mexico’s “second national anthem.” It is a lively piece interspersed with periods of virtuosic lyricism. The music changes frequently, all without losing its underlying tango rhythm. It’s a work designed to showcase an individual (solos for violin, flute, trumpet), a section (the percussion section is especially active).
Carlos Chavez, often described as Mexico’s Aaron Copland, his music shows a strong connection to the indigenous and folk music of Mexico. Chavez wrote in his program notes about his Sinfonia India, Symphony No 2, “The great expressive strength of indigenous art is rooted in its intrinsic variety.” Listening to the piece is like taking a tour from city to city, each with its own sound world.
