VENTURA COLLEGE GALLERY 2 HOSTS
SCULPTURE EXHIBIT
VENTURA: The Ventura College Gallery 2 ends its fall exhibits with an unusual sculpture show. The exhibit runs from November 14 through December 12. Gallery 2 presents “Like the Yorktown” by Dean de Cocker. Peter Frank says, “the object hood of a sculpture – its relational definition in some sort of opposition to other objects – becomes in de Cocker’s practice both a formal and a conceptual, even existential, dynamic. These things are things distinct from other things, but also things composed of things put into formal relationship yet with other things. De Cocker does not simply make shapes, but plays with them, compounding them into balanced entireties in which the quality of balance and the quality of entirety – the syntax and the sentence, the phrasing and the phrase – are of equal impact.”
De Cocker’s artist statement says: “My work is part of a continuing series, “Blue Jackets Return.” From the first winged-shaped structures to the current work, I have been exploring my interest in formal elements by transforming flat, two-dimensional surfaces into three-dimensional objects. I derive much of my inspiration from everyday objects such as mailboxes, aircraft structures, wings and propellers, heavy machinery and architectural works. These objects become conceptual elements, which I transform first into drawings. Then, via techniques of aircraft construction, I fabricate objects of inner structures and outer coverings that create volumetric enclosures. Recently, my interest in racecar fabrication and finishing has led to subtle changes in structure and the incorporation of color.”
He continues, “The titles of my works have no real meaning, but due to my interest in the construction techniques of WWII aircraft, I take my titles from the WWII battles in the South Pacific.”
The schedule for the remainder of the semester is Monday – Friday, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, and Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9: 00 p.m. For additional information and changes on hours, call Sharon Coughran-Rayden, gallery director, at Ventura College, (805) 648-8974 or contact her by email at sharon@cielhaus.com.#####
