VENTURA COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
HOSTING THIRD ANNUAL WBCA PINK ZONEŽ,
A DAY FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
The Ventura College Women’s Basketball team, in conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) will be hosting its third annual WBCA Pink Zone breast cancer awareness game on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. The Pirates will take on Santa Barbara City College at 7 p.m. at the Ventura College Athletic Event Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. The Ventura College men’s team will play a 5 p.m. game that same evening, also against Santa Barbara.
Various activities promoting cancer awareness will begin at 5 p.m. A silent auction benefiting Ribbons of Life Breast Cancer Foundation will take place between 5-8 p.m. Information tables will be available from various agencies throughout the community. Other activities may include a bake sale, “Special Hearts,” in honor of those diagnosed with breast cancer, and honorary starters – all breast cancer patients/survivors – will be introduced before the game. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Ribbons of Life.
Inspired by the memory of Cherie Hampton Tsui, who passed away from cancer in 2007, the team has raised over $13,000 for Ribbons of Life over the past three years. The event has raised awareness of breast cancer, early detection, and survivability of the disease throughout the community.
The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as “Think Pink,” in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball on campuses and communities. By 2010, over 1,800 participants joined to surpass $1,045,000 in donations and reached over 922,000 fans. Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised nearly $3.3 million, reached approximately 2.7 million fans, and unified over 4,700 participants in only four years.
The Ribbons of Life Breast Cancer Foundation (ROL) serves as a bridge to the Ventura County community while serving as a clearinghouse of information for all affected by breast cancer. ROL is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation established in November 2007 as a charitable service focused entirely on breast cancer. It consists of a community of cultures, genders, and ages devoted to providing education, advocacy, and social support to those affected. ROL is a local “grassroots” organization run by volunteers from a variety of professions and socioeconomic backgrounds. Anyone wishing to provide something positive to ROL is welcome to participate.
