IROKO: Tree of Life investigates the treatment of the Ceiba tree, exploring modern ecology as well as the tree’s association with protection and the ancestors for cultures the world over. This diverse, interdisciplinary, multimedia, collaborative installation incorporates work by printmaker Imna Arroyo, digital and graphic artist Tao Chen, and film director and Communication professor Jaime Gomez. Traditional prints and three-dimensional sculpture combine with a film that incorporates visuals, dance, and music to create a multi-sensory viewing experience. The IROKO exhibit is framed by an exhibition catalogue with essays by historians, art historians, writers, layer curators, museum/gallery directors, an ecologist, sociologist and a spiritualist. The catalogue also includes contributions from Ventura College Faculty and Art Historian, Maline Werness-Rude.
