Theatre Arts Fall 2013 One-Act Play Festival 10/31/13-11/10/13
Today’s Masters of Comedy Deliver an Evening of Laughs and Entertainment at Ventura College
Under the instruction of Professor Jay Varela, the Ventura College Theatre Arts Department opens the academic year with the Fall 2013 One-Act Play Festival featuring comedies by Ethan Cohen, Christopher Durang, and Woody Allen.
“Talking Cure,” written by Ethan Cohen, one of the infamous filmmaking duo, the Cohen Brothers, centers around Jerry, a mailman recently incarcerated in a neuropsychiatric hospital for going postal. Through a series of short scenes directed by student Michael Davis, Cohen entertains his audience with the therapist’s endeavor to gain the upper hand over his ostensible patient who refuses to admit the existence of a problem.
"Dentity Crisis,” by Christopher Durang and directed by student Brendan Hutchinson, introduces the audience to Jane, a young woman recovering from a nervous breakdown and suicide attempt, who is tormented by the insane individuals in her life. Her mother believes she invented cheese and banana bread and is having an affair with a man that is Jane’s brother, father, grandfather, or a count. Just when she begins to find solace in her psychiatrist, he too adds fuel to the hopelessness of isolating anyone’s identity in this hilarious look into depression and mental illness in a world full of contradiction.
Set within a low-cost, post-wedding love nest, the members of a dysfunctional Long Island wedding party gather to ignite an evening of hilarity and secret spilling in Woody Allen’s “Honeymoon Motel.” Directed by student Sara Dunham, Allen masterfully creates a relentless string of revelations about each character’s most humiliating defects and most intimate personal scandals that soon become a wedding night the audience will not forget.
Ventura College Theatre Arts Department offers an active production program both onstage and backstage by providing hands-on, high-quality academic theatre education and stage production experience. The department believes theatre provides enrichment for both its participants and its audience, preparing students to go on to four-year universities, professional training programs, or to work in the theatre, film, or television industries.
