BUS V95 - MULTI-SKILLED MEDICAL ASSISTANT
About the Program
This course will prepare students for entry-level positions as either a front office or back office medical assistant. The course will cover general skills, including medical ethics, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, basic pharmacology, computer skills, and review of basic English skills. It will also include front office skills such as appointment scheduling, oral and written communication skills, basic medical coding, billing and collections,medical insurance, medical records, and filing. Skills are performed both manually and on computer. It will provide back office skills training in asepsis, drug administration, exam preparation and assisting, vital signs, basic lab testing and emergency first aid. Students are required to develop a personal portfolio of their skills for use in the job search. The course also includes resume writing and preparation for interviews. Field trips may be required.
Internship
Students may elect to participate in an unpaid, credit/no credit, 180-hour "internship/externship" at the completion of the 12-week Medical Assistant course. Students are assigned to a medical office where they gain on-the-job experience in both front and back office procedures. The 180 hours is considered a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week. Enrollment in the "internship/externship" is at the discretion of the student who must successfully pass the medical assistant course, and officially enroll in BUS 95."

Linda is a certified coding specialist, physician based. She has been in the healthcare industry for more than 25 years. She has taught front office medical courses at Ventura College since 1987.

Lucy is a Ventura College Alumni. She graduated from San Diego State University with honors in the field of nursing. She has practiced in the health care field since 1996 and has been a registered nurse and public health nurse since 2001. Her back office experience is based in Internal Medicine & Family Practice, as well as medical/surgical nursing. She has taught for Ventura College since 2003.
