Audition Tips
Here are a list of tips to prepare you for an audition:
-
Auditions are always held the week before rehearsals begin. Check the theatre call-board for the exact location.
-
Read the play before you audition so you know what the play is about and who the characters are. We always place copies of the play at the reserve desk in the Ventura college library.
-
When you come to auditions, fill out an Audition Form and select a "side" to read.
-
"Sides" (selections from the play) will be provided for you. You will need to share them with other people auditioning.
-
Be sure you are aware of when rehearsal times are and can commit to the time frame of the rehearsal schedule, including evenings and weekends.
-
Although you will read for a specific character, keep your options open and take advantage of opportunities to read for other characters if you are asked to.
-
When reading, project your voice so you can be heard and demonstrate good, clear dictation and articulation.
-
Try to show us a physical, as well as a vocal, potential for the character.
-
Enthusiasm and energy go a long way on the stage.
-
Be sure all your questions are answered when you audition.
-
If you are not cast, volunteer to work as an assistant director or member of the crew. There are lots of opportunities for participation in the show other than performing on stage.
