What is a receptionist?Receptionists answer telephones, route and screen calls, greet visitors, respond to inquiries, and provide organization information. Successful receptionists possess excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills. Receptionists may also handle filing and records management, and should be familiar basic computer applications.
According to the 2010-11 Occupational Outlook Handbook:
Employment of receptionists and information clerks is expected to increase by 15 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will result from growth in industries such as offices of physicians and in other health practitioners, legal services, personal care services, construction, and management and technical consulting.

BUS V94 Professional Reception Skills
Hours: 4 lecture weekly
Students will learn to identify attributes of an effective receptionist and develop listening and communication skills, filing, telephone and basic computer skills. Time management and conflict resolution will also be covered. Additionally, students will create a resume and practice interviewing techniques.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire and apply the technical skills necessary to secure entry level employment in the clerical field through written exercises, electronic exercises, record management and role playing. Students will produce work processing documents, resumes, professional email, manage records, and use the Internet to search efficiently. Students will understand the rules of ethical behavior. Students will know how to prepare a resume and accomplish a successful job interview. (A Proficiency Award is awarded for completion of this 4-unit course.)
