Home Economics
The Ventura College Home Economics Department consists of classes in nutrition, human development (cross listed with the Child Development Department), sewing, clothing construction / tailoring, and fashion merchandising.
Student Learning Outcomes
HEC V10: (1) Given nutrition information, students will analyze the use of accepted diet planning guides and nutrient information, as well as identify lifestyle behaviors relative to nutrition, as measured by objective, written assessments, as well as instructor observation of class discussions. (2) Given cultural behaviors toward food and diet supplements, students will identify sources of vitamins and minerals, as well as the pros and cons of supplement use, in addition to strategies for improving the diets of individuals of all ages, as measured by objective, written assessments, as well as instructor observation of classroom discussions.
HEC 11: Students will demonstrate the operation and maintenance of sewing/pressing equipment, as well as pattern selection, accurate reading of pattern envelope information, and basic sewing skills as measured by the production of sewing projects.
HEC 12A: Given advanced instruction in garment construction, students will demonstrate the effective and safe operation of various industrial sewing machines, in addition to hand tailoring and sewing machine tailoring techniques as measured by peer and instructor critique of finished garments.
HEC 15: (1) Given a variety of swatches, students will identify specific characteristics of fibers as measured by objective, written assessments. (2) Students will also be able to identify yarn and fabric construction as measured by a visual identification test. (3) Students will analyze the appropriate use and care for a variety of consumer textile products, the accuracy of which will be measured by objective, written tests.
HEC 16: (1) Given a variety of patternmaking tools, students will be able to demonstrate alternations for themselves and for others, as measured by instructor evaluation. (2) Students will analyze the construction techniques of ready-to-wear and couture fashions as measured by instructor evaluation.
