READING STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

ENGLISH V05 - COLLEGE-LEVEL READING FOR CRITICAL ANALYSIS - 3.5 Units

  • CSLO-1: Students will use appropriate techniques to read and comprehend lengthy college-level material.
  • CSLO-2: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the theory and methodology of reading.
  • CSLO-3: Students will write college-level essays based on the topics of the readings and related discussions.
  • CSLO-4: Students will apply new vocabulary and distinguish between subtle differences in meanings of words.

Assessment:

  • Vocabulary and comprehension tests, in-class discussion, written summaries and journal entries. 

ENGLISH V06A - ACADEMIC READING - 3.5 Units

  • CSLO-1: Students will use appropriate techniques to read and comprehend expository textbooks at the college level.
  • CSLO-2: Students will analyze and evaluate college-level texts or complex reading assignments.
  • CSLO-3: Students will increase and apply new vocabulary in academic contexts.

ENGLISH V07 - INTERMEDIATE READING COMPREHENSION & LANGUAGE ACQUISITION - 3.5 Units

  • CSLO-2: Students will paraphrase, summarize and respond to short essays and articles.
  • CSLO-3: Students will apply new vocabulary including idioms in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

ENGLISH V08A - LOW-BEGINNING READING COMPREHENSION - 3.5 Units

  • CSLO-3: Students will apply appropriate strategies for vocabulary acquisition.

  • CSLO-2: Students will paraphrase, summarize and respond to simple passages two to three paragraphs in length in oral and written contexts.
  • CSLO-3: Students will apply appropriate strategies for vocabulary acquisition, including academic vocabulary.
