How to Establish California Residency
Doing the following things when you first arrive in California will support your request to become a California resident for your second year at Ventura College:
- Change of Permanent Address for Selective Services (military draft) at the Post Office or online. You will receive a new Selective Services card in the mail, which will be required as one proof of California residency.
- Establish a Free Checking Account with your California address.
- Get a California Drivers License or California I.D. from Dept of Motor Vehicles (Note- a driver's license is a declaration of residency in the state that issues it. If you have a driver's license from home, you will need to replace it with a California license. A California ID card will not count if you still have an out of state driver's license.)
- Register to Vote in California
- To be a resident, your parents cannot claim you on their taxes for the time that you are in California. You must be able to show that you are financially independent.
Keep all copies and forms from the above information for it is the necessary proof used to establish your claim of residency. Establishing residency also requires you to have certain documents with you. In order for you to complete the above paperwork to establish residency, you will need the following documents with you when you move.
Bring these documents with you in order to begin to establish California Residency:
- Social Security Card
- Official Birth Certificate Copy
- Current Drivers License from your home state or state ID card
Again this is only a partial list of the steps you can take to become a resident of California. To get a more complete list you will want to visit our Admissions and Records Office and get the Residency Reclassification Request form. It is also important to realize each residency reclassification is unique and handled on a case by case basis.
If you are granted California residency your estimated Year 2 costs will be $5,900 compared to the $10,700 you paid in Year 1.
Please fill out forms (if you have not done so already) and send to the proper addresses.
